How to Achieve Voluminous Wash & Go Curls on Fine Natural Hair

For fine and low density natural hair, it can be a challenge to achieve volume or big hair – especially on day 1. Many products tend to weigh the hair down, resulting in curls that are flat, stiff, and lack movement. With a little help from DE Artist Greg Gilmore and naturalista Jayani, we’re going to show you in 5 steps how to get those Instagrammable curls that pop on day 1 – for fine, low density natural hair.

Step 1: Start with a clean slate

The first step for any successful wash and go style is to have clean and moisturized hair.  A buildup of oils, butters, and styling products can leave curls weighed down and limp. Concentrating on the scalp, lather and cleanse using the Almond & Avocado Moisturizing & Detangling Shampoo. As you cleanse, move the suds through to the ends of the hair to cleanse, hydrate, and remove product buildup.  Rinse thoroughly and apply the Almond & Avocado Moisturizing & Detangling Conditioner from roots to ends.

Depending on your hair’s needs, leave the Almond & Avocado Moisturizing & Detangling Conditioner in for 3 to 15 minutes, with or without heat. Use a wide-tooth comb to detangle hair thoroughly and rinse.

Step 2: Get rid of excess water

With fine natural hair, styling while soaking wet can impact final results. For more volume, blot hair with a microfiber towel or old t-shirt to soak up excess moisture. Once hair is damp but not dry, apply Almond & Avocado Detangling Leave-In. Use enough to cover all your hair without saturating or weighing down.

Step 3: Swap gel for mousse

Most gels and curling creams are too heavy for fine hair, resulting in curls that are weighed down or too crunchy. For flexible hold and volume, finger rake Almond & Avocado Curl Enhancing Mousse throughout the hair in medium-sized sections. 2 to 3 pumps of this ultra-moisturizing foam per section provides touchable hold without a crunchy or greasy feel.

Step 4: Make friends with your diffuser

One curly trick that bloggers and pros alike can agree on to achieve big hair is diffusing. Diffusing not only helps speed up the drying process, it also helps create more voluminous styling results without frizz. On medium heat, diffuse your curls by moving the bowl of the diffuser around the hair, gently scrunching the ends of your hair up to the mid-shaft or roots.

Step 5: Touch and tease

Once your hair is completely dry from diffusing, it’s time to do some light picking and finger styling. In medium sized sections, use a wide tooth comb or pick to backcomb and fluff at the roots without disturbing the length of the curls.

Once you’ve achieved your desired level of volume, use your fingers to style remaining pieces of hair in place.

Enjoy touchable, soft, defined and voluminous curls on day 1!
