Locs can be the beginning of a thriving versatile hair journey. During the process of your loc journey it can take anywhere between an average of 6 months to a year for your hair to fully loc. Patience is your friend during this period – loving on your new locs along with being patient will ensure that your loc journey surpasses your expectations and will allow you to move to the rhythm and beat made just for you!
Because each crown of locs has its own amazing characteristics, there are so many different variations to wear locs. This can range from godly lengths with majestic colors to unique styles that
LOC JOURNEY TIP #1: HYDRATION
Before starting your locs, ask yourself, “Have I been drinking plenty of water?” If not, start immediately. Locs need to be hydrated and hydration starts within the body. The human body consist of 65% to 70% water and our hair is definitely in alignment with that. Therefore, drinking water is essential for the health, strength, and density of both new and mature locs. The absence of hydrating your body could possibly affect your loc journey in a tremendous way. When starting locs we want the totality effect of mind, body and spirit!
LOC JOURNEY TIP #2: CLEANSING
Cleansing with moisture and protein infused products is the foundation of a healthy crown! Moisture will encourage the growth and protein will encourage strength. The two components of moisture and protein equals a healthy mane of hair.
With new locs, wait at least 1-2 weeks before your very first shampoo – you want your starter locs to mature first. When you decide to do your initial cleanse, I recommend Design Essentials Honey Cream Moisture Retention Shampoo or Design Essentials Oat & Henna Deep Cleansing Shampoo to assist with the moisture and protein balance you’ll need to start and maintain your locs.
For mature locs, shampooing (and conditioning – but we’ll discuss this more in the next tip) can be done on an average of 2-4 weeks. But this depends on personal contributing factors such as lifestyle, hair type, and scalp maintenance. Just know that the expectations of your desired results are contingent to this beautiful new process and it is still very necessary to maintain a regime of cleansing and conditioning throughout this natural quest of healthy free flowing tresses!
LOC JOURNEY TIP#3: MOISTURIZING
As for using a conditioner to moisturize your locs, I find that there are many different opinions about rather we should condition our locs…If you do choose to condition your locs use Design Essentials Rosemary Mint Stimulating Conditioner as a go-to for long-lasting moisture and to give your locs a soft feel to each strand connected to your crown. This conditioner works great for locs because Rosemary – purifies and restores locs leaving them extremely soft and manageable; while Peppermint – an aroma-therapeutic scent invigorates and calms the senses, while simultaneously treating the scalp.
If you rather bypass conditioning your locs, to prevent dryness and breakage be sure to use a moisturizing lightweight leave-in in its place. Try Design Essentials Bamboo & Silk HCO Leave-In-Conditioner which quickly penetrates deep within the hair shaft to strengthen, replenish, and add shine to your locs.
LOC JOURNEY TIP#4: SCALP CARE
Scalp concerns when adorning locs is something you may not think about, but YOUR SCALP MATTERS! Using Design Essentials Scalp & Skin Care Anti-Itch & Tension Relief will help replenish natural oils and nutrients to your scalp to calm and soothe any dryness or itchiness. I also highly recommend natural tea tree oil to moisturize and stimulate the scalp. Both products will help you get through to your next cleansing and conditioning.
Also, when grooming your locs be mindful of the tension you’re applying. You want your locs to lay nice and smooth against the scalp. The key to having more consistent locs is to use a consistent styling method that suites your needs and desires.
Finally, my loves, the most important tip that I LOVE to give is to BE IN LOVE with your locs! Under (and over) stand that there are no locs that are exactly the same. We have the potential of having a multitude of different varieties and textures of locs. Embrace what your locs harmonize and find purpose in keeping your locs healthy!
