If you’re a frequent follower of our musings, then you’re probably aware that we’re big fans of all natural texture hair. However, we do understand that not everyone is ready to take the plunge and embrace their natural curls.
It’s completely up to you whether or not you decide to chemically straighten your hair.
But because chemical relaxers can cause a LOT of damage to your hair, you have to keep in mind that relaxed hair requires some maintenance to keep it healthy. To extend the life of your relaxed hair, here are a few tips to apply when you’re in between treatments.
Less shampooing
If you have relaxed hair, you should be washing it 1-2 times per week. Some women with relaxed hair think that going weeks without shampooing is a good idea. This is crazy. You need to wash your hair at least once a week to remove buildup and unclog your pores.
Sulfate-free products
After a relaxing treatment, your hair has already been touched by so many chemicals that you don’t want to add any more into your normal hair care routine on top of that. Use products that are sulfate-free and your hair will have a lot less dryness and breakage.
Avoid heat
Try to steer clear of flat irons, blow dryers, and curling irons as much as possible if you have relaxed hair. The less heat you apply to processed hair, the better it will look and the healthier it will be. Heat + chemically processed hair = excessive damage. A few dos that don’t require a lot of heat are protective hairstyles like wet sets, buns, braids, and chignons.

Coconut and almond oil
Hair care products with these two secret ingredients will work wonders on your relaxed hair that has been stripped of its natural oils. That’s because these oils are able to penetrate your strands to really provide deep moisture that lasts. We highly recommend the Coconut & Monoi Deep Moisture Oil Treatment.
Don’t overlap treatments
Don’t get impatient between treatments and get your hair relaxed again before you should. Your hair needs some time to recover and grow a little. A good recommendation is to allow your natural hair to grow out for 8 weeks before getting your hair relaxed again.
Deep condition
Again, since your relaxed hair is not in its natural state and is probably very dried out, you need to take an extra step to ensure that it stays moisturized and healthy. The perfect solution is using a deep conditioner at least twice a month. Try this one.
