Extension Care for the Active Lifestyle
Chelsea Jackson of Chelsea Loves Yoga was selected as a fitness feature for the DE Blog, so I had the chance to give her a Design Essentials makeover. She arrived with a ponytail in the back, and two twists on each side that were pinned back. During her consultation, I quickly discovered that she loved wearing a part in the middle . She showed me numerous pictures of herself wearing various styles and I determined that simple elegance was consistent with all of her looks.
At first glance, I noticed that she was natural and that she had color throughout the ends of the ponytail. She explained that she actually had extensions sewn it to give her own hair a break. Before she took the ponytail down, I couldn’t tell she had an install at all because the top of her natural hair was left out. She had actually found a natural texture that blended well with her own hair, which is key to having a natural look. I did notice that there seemed to be some product build up on both her hair and the natural extensions, in addition to the fact that she needed some moisture as well. Once her consultation was complete, I began to style her hair with the following steps.
Get Chelsea’s Look
Step 1:
Cleanse 2 times with Oat Protein & Henna Fuller, Thicker, Stronger, Deep Cleansing Shampoo to remove product build up. Cleanse once more for a total of 3 times with Natural Almond & Avocado Moisturizing and Detangling Shampoo to impart moisture.
Step 2:
Apply Express Instant Moisturizing Conditioner section by section working from ends to roots and using a cupping motion with the hand to remove tangles from the hair. (The hand should form the shape of a cupped comb) Work through carefully as not to cause discomfort or disturbance of the install.
Step 3:
After completely detangling the hair, rinse thoroughly with tepid water to remove conditioner.
Step 4:
Towel blot and apply Almond & Avocado Moisturizing and Detangling Leave-In Conditioner and begin to detangle using a wide tooth comb starting from the ends working toward the scalp.
Step 5:
After thoroughly detangling, begin to blow dry the hair with a paddle brush while using manageable subsections for control.
Once the hair is dry, I sectioned the hair to expose the braids underneath, then I placed her under a hooded dryer to be sure that the braided hair dries completely. This is very important. If it does not dry completely it can cause hair have a mildew smell and will affect the outcome of the final style.
Step 6:
Once all hair is dry, apply a dime size of Silk Essentials Thermal Strengthening Serum to the hair and begin to flat iron the hair to create uniformed curls throughout the hair.
Step 7:
Continue to create curls until complete and use fingers to slightly separate curls.
Step 8:
Mist the hair with Reflections Liquid Shine all over and finish with the FORM Professional Holding Spray. Tip: When working out, pull the front of the hair back towards the crown and secure with bobby pins to keep hair out of the face. For after work play, simply remove the pins, shake and go.
Maintenance Tips & Products:
Pin curl the hair all over at night securing each curl with bobby pins. Apply a satin bonnet or sleep on a satin pillow case to preserve style. Apply Silk or Hydrience Argan Moisturizing Cream as needed for moisture. Spray on FORM Professional Holding Spray to combat humidity and reversion during high powered yoga work outs. Cleanse again after 1 to 2 weeks depending upon activities.
