Design Essentials:  What inspired you to get into the hair industry and when did you recognize the moment you ‘made it’ as a celebrity stylists? Tokyo Stylez:  I started doing hair because there was no one to do my little sister’s hair. I was just doing it as a little hobby until people started booking me at 11 and paying me. That’s when I knew I was good and could possibly pursue this full time. I think my “I made it” moment was when I had the opportunity to do Gabrielle Union’s hair and beat out a few already considered stylists. Design Essentials:  You’ve had the opportunity work with an impressive celebrity clientele list, what are some of the pros and cons of hairstyling for celebrities? TS:  I always say that working with celebrities is both a blessing and a curse. My favorite thing about working with celebrities is the exposure, but sometimes my least favorite thing is the exposure. Some days you just want to take it easy, but you know millions [of people] can potentially be watching so no matter what you have to top yourself. Design Essentials:  Give us a little insight on what hair trends we can expect to see this spring and summer…. TS:  People are going short now and that’s the way the trends are swinging. You can’t go wrong with shoulder length styles and bobs.

Design Essentials: Any hair care advice for women who want to experiment with hair color this season? TS:  You guys are trying to get all my trade secrets now [Laughs].  I like to use coconut oil first before actually coloring the hair just to protect it from the breakage as much as possible.  But regardless if you’re relaxed or natural, women who want color should consult a certified professional to do it, and also make sure their hair is healthy to begin with. This includes proper maintenance once it’s done including treatments, conditioning, and regular visits to your stylist. Design Essentials:  Do you have any favorite Design Essentials products that you like to use? TS:  You know, I used to use the Form Professional Holding Spray. I think I need to start using it again because I liked it! Design Essentials:  What’s next for Tokyo Stylez? TS:  Right now I’m very excited and focused on launching my hair perfume which will be coming out soon!
